5.9 quake 25 km E of Salvacion, Philippines, 16 Nov 6.37 am (GMT +8)
Philippines was shaken near the town of Marihatag by an earthquake of magnitude 5.9 only 7 minutes ago, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter early morning on Monday 16 November 2020 at 6.37 am local time. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude 6.1 earthquake.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should have been felt by everybody in the area of the epicenter. In those areas, dangerous ground shaking occurred with the potential to inflict moderate to heavy damage to buildings and other infrastructure. Moderate shaking probably occurred in Salvacion (pop. 2,100) located 25 km from the epicenter, Gamut (pop. 3,500) 27 km away, Aras-asan (pop. 5,100) 27 km away, and Unidad (pop. 3,300) 27 km away.
Weak shaking might have been felt in Butuan (pop. 309,700) located 102 km from the epicenter, Libertad (pop. 250,400) 106 km away, and Cagayan de Oro (pop. 445,100) 197 km away.
