Suriname

Useful information on Suriname
General: Suriname or Surinam, officially the Republic of Suriname, is a country in northern South America. Suriname is situated on the northeast coast of South America, between Guyana and French Guiana. It has an estimated population of about 470,000, most of whom live on the north coast of the country, where the capital Paramaribo is located. Suriname is the smallest independent country in South America. Suriname, formerly Dutch Guiana, became a Dutch colony in 1667. Independence from the Netherlands was granted in 1975. Five years later the civilian government was replaced by a military regime that soon declared it a socialist republic and controlled it until 1987, when international pressure forced a democratic election. In 1990, the military took over again, but soon after (in 1991) a four-party coalition government was democratically elected. The coalition expanded to eight parties in 2005 and has continued to rule since. International telephone country code: +597, Internet country code: .sr, Electricity voltage: 127V frequency 60 Hz, Electrical outlet: Type C European 2-pin and type F Schuko, Time zone: -3 GMT (Suriname does use daylight saving time)
Languages: Suriname is home to about 15 distinct languages. Surinamese society is one of the most multilingual in the world. Dutch is the sole official language and is the language of education, government, business and the media. Over 60 percent of the population speak it as a mother tongue, and most of the rest speak it as a second language. It is the only Dutch-speaking country in South America. Other languages spoken in Suriname include Amerindian languages, Creole languages, Sranang Tongo (Taki-Taki), Suriname Javanese and Sarnami Hindustani.
Climate: Suriname is situated very close to the equator and has a very hot tropical climate. Temperatures do not vary much throughout the year. Taxis: Taxis don't have meters in Suriname, so it is advisable to agree the fare before you get into the cab. Avoid unofficial taxis or hailing a taxi on the street. Phone a reputable taxi company or order one through the hotel or restaurant. Taxis are available at major hotels.
Currency: The Suriname dollar (SRD) has been the currency of Suriname since 2004. It is divided into 100 cents. The symbol for SRD can be written $Sur. The dollar replaced the Surinamese guilder (SRG), with one dollar equal to 1000 guilders. The approximate exchange rate on 3rd February 2011 was: 1 Euro = 4.55 SRD, 1 US$ = 3.30 SRD, 1 GB£ = 5.36 SRD.
Money: Credit cards are not widely accepted outside the major hotels in Suriname. It is advisable to check with your intended hotel to confirm that credit cards are accepted and to bring sufficient currency for your visit. US dollars and Euros are accepted, but not UK Pound Sterling. Change money at a bank or 'cambio'. Currency restrictions: The import of local and foreign currency is unlimited, provided amounts in excess of US$10,000, or equivalent, are declared on arrival. Export of currency must not exceed the amount declared on arrival.
Casinos: Suriname law requires licence holders to have a casino within an established casino site with hotel. Casinos in Suriname provide a good number of jobs. Although the casinos are mostly the result of foreign investment capital and the management running them is foreign, the personnel is Surinamese.
